C. Martin Harris is associate vice president of the Health Enterprise and Chief Business Officer at the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. He previously served as a practicing physician in the Department of Internal Medicine and Chief Information Officer at Cleveland Clinic, where he oversaw the strategic development of the organization’s integrated information technology infrastructure including the electronic health record system (EHR).

Harris was appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Information Technology Standards Committee, which is charged with making recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology on standards and certification criteria for the electronic exchange of health information. He is past Chairman of the Health Care Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the Health and Human Services Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine. He also received a Presidential appointment to the Commission on Care for America’s Wounded Warriors and to the Congressional Commission on Systemic Interoperability. He is the co-author of “IT’s About Patient Care: Transforming Healthcare Information Technology the Cleveland Clinic Way,” published by McGraw Hill in 2016.

Harris received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and completed his residency training in general internal medicine at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar fellowship in General Internal Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and holds a Masters in Business Administration in Healthcare Management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
