Arumugam Manthiram obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in Solid State Chemistry. He joined the University of Texas at Austin in 1986 as a postdoctoral researcher and became Assistant Professor in 1991. He is currently a Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has been holding the Charlotte Maer Patton Centennial Fellowship in Engineering since 1998. He is an active participant of the Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program and Texas Materials Institute, which is an interdisciplinary research unit. Manthiram has been involved in a wide range of research problems at the interface between materials chemistry and engineering. His research centers on the design, chemical synthesis, characterization, properties and performance of advanced materials. He is involved in developing new materials for electrochemical power sources such as lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. In addition, he is involved in developing new synthesis processes, oxygen separation membranes, fine magnetic particles, and nanomaterials. He has published over 190 papers in the area of Materials Science and Engineering.
