Dr. Hayward researches the influence of socioeconomic achievement on the health of older Americans. His current studies examine: early life influences on socioeconomic and race disparities in adult morbidity and mortality; the demography of race/ethnic disparities in life expectancy; and the health consequences of marriage, divorce and widowhood.

He is the author of several books and journal articles about health as a determinant of racial inequality in retirement; the connection between childhood health and adult morbidity; and the socioeconomic origins of the race gap in chronic disease morbidity.

Dr. Hayward has extensive media experience and has appeared in the Washington Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Forbes and ABC World News Tonight.
