Carole Holahan is a professor emerita in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She studies adult development and aging and focuses on psychosocial predictors of health behavior, successful aging, and women’s health. She has studied the role of depressive symptoms and social contextual factors in smoking with data from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study and the role of living with a smoker in health risk behaviors and overweight and obesity with this sample. She has also investigated psychosocial factors and the role of health and aging attitudes in health promotion in adulthood and aging with other samples. In addition, she has pursued the study of successful aging through her affiliation with the Terman Study of the Gifted, a major longitudinal study in the social and behavioral sciences. She is the lead author of a book with Stanford University Press, The Gifted Group in Later Maturity, which describes the lives of the members of the Terman Study. She is a fellow in the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Gerontological Society of America.
