Gutell received his Ph.D. from University of California-Santa Cruz in molecular biology. After a post-doc, he worked in several biotechnology companies, including Gen-Probe and Cangene. His research group uses computational biology and bioinformatics to study: RNA secondary and tertiary structure prediction with comparative sequence analysis; relationships between RNA sequences and their higher-order structures; RNA folding; and, RNA structure-based phylogenetic analysis. He also maintains a comparative RNA Web site, or knowledgbase, at www.rna.ccbb.utexas.edu. See also Gutell's page on the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology Web site.
