Jeffrey Meikle is the Stiles Professor in American Studies. His research interests as a cultural historian include industrial design and technology, visual representation in popular print media, and alternative cultures from 1950 to the present. Meikle teaches courses in history of design, architecture and technology in the U.S.; the cultural history of the post-1945 era, especially the modern/postmodern shift; the Beat writers and their cultural influence; and American Studies theory and methods.
His books include Twentieth Century Limited: Industrial Design in America, 1925-1939; American Plastic: A Cultural History; and Design in the USA. He has received research awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Mellon Foundation, and the Getty Grant Program.
