Darla R Smith
Dr. Darla R Smith is Professor Emerita at the University of Texas El Paso. She earned her undergraduate degree from Abilene Christian University, Master of Science degree from West Texas A&M, and PhD from Texas Woman's University. During Darla's career she distinguished herself as an educator, a scholar, and a leader.
Dr. Smith's success as an educator is grounded in her passion for promoting physically active lifestyles. She has positively impacted students ranging from 1st grade to PhD students. She began her career at Abilene ISD teaching physical education and coaching track. After earning her doctoral degree, she shifted her focus to preparing future educators as a professor of biomechanics at UTEP.
In 2011, Darla retired from her full-time position as Professor and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology at the UTEP. After retirement, she relocated to Austin, where she continues to teach part-time for UT Austin.
Dr. Smith's contributions as a scholar include authoring 6 versions of the instructor's manual accompanying a popular biomechanics textbook and 26 articles in professional journals. She has also made over 50 professional presentations. Many of her publications and presentations focused on usable information for the practitioner.
