Brian holds bachelors and masters degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education, respectively, from the University of Southern Maine and a doctorate in General Special Education from The University of Texas at Austin (1984). He taught special education in Maine for 2 years in a small, rural K-8 school and also taught for 1 year at the high school level. He is currently a Research Professor and Fellow in the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk and teaches special education courses in the Department of Special Education. He has also served as an adjunct professor and visiting professor at Florida Atlantic University, the University of Hawaii, Pacific Lutheran University, the University of Louisville, and Texas State University. Brian worked for 10 years as the Director of Research for Pro-Ed, a special education publishing company in Austin before serving as the Director of the Office for Students with Disabilities at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

Brian has served as the Co-Principal Investigator for several state and federal grants. He is the Co-editor-in-Chief of the Learning Disability Quarterly and has served as Consulting or Guest Editor for a dozen disability-related journals. Brian has over 100 publications, including articles, books, book chapters, assessments, and intervention materials focusing on mathematics, language arts, and assistive technology applications for students with disabilities. He also has made well over 100 presentation at state, national, and international conferences. Brian has received professional awards from the Council for Learning Disabilities and the American Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. He is a Fellow in the International Academy of Research in Learning Disabilities. Brian currently serves as the faculty co-coordinator for the Assistive and Instructional Technology Lab in the College of Education.
